A Call to Action: "Toxic Jungle No.2" and the Urgent Plea of "Say Goodbye to Mother Earth"

Updated: Jun 1, 2024

"Toxic Jungle No.2" by Abstract Artist, Anthony Bell

As a recording artist based in Brazil back in the 80s, I’ve always felt deeply connected to the world around me. This connection inspired me to write the song "Say Goodbye to Mother Earth," in 1982, a heartfelt lament on our planet’s plight. Man's interaction with our planet has long been a concern of mine, a passion that drives me to call for change before it’s too late. This urgency was the force behind my latest work of abstract art, "Toxic Jungle No.2," which I painted with the song firmly in my mind. These are my song's "Say Goodbye to Mother Earth" lyrics:

They tell you it's fine

But nature can't lie

Some of it's gone

It's too late to cry"

Time can be long

I think it's short

One thing I know

It can't be bought

Back again

If the end of the World came

Where will we go?

TV stops working, end of the show

Say goodbye to Mother Earth

We treated so bad

I don't know why

People don't try to see what's going on in our World, it is our World

When mountains crumble, into the seas

No one to hear us, where's are all the trees?

Say goodbye to Mother Earth

We treated it so bad

If the end of the World came

Where will we go?

TV stops working, end of the show

Say goodbye to Mother Earth

We treated so bad

The Inspiration behind "Toxic Jungle No.2"

When I painted "Toxic Jungle No.2," I had the themes of my song echoing in every brushstroke. My concerns about Mother Earth, climate change, plastic pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions were never far from my mind. The painting is a vivid, unsettling depiction of the world we are creating; a toxic jungle, suffocating under the weight of our wasteful nature.

Each colour, each chaotic swirl, represents the turmoil we’ve inflicted on our planet. The greens are not the vibrant hues of a thriving forest but the sickly shades of pollution. The blues are not the clear skies and clean waters but the murky depths of our discarded plastics. This work is a mirror, reflecting back the damage we’ve done and continue to do.

A Troubling Reality

The statistics are horrifying. Every year, we dump 8 million metric tons of plastic into our oceans. The concentration of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere is the highest it’s been in 800,000 years. Our wasteful practices have led to vast landfills, some covering areas as large as entire cities. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch spans an area twice the size of Texas. These are not just numbers; they are the death tolls of ecosystems, the extinction cries of countless species, and the countdown to our own demise.

A Plea for Action!

I created "Toxic Jungle No.2" and the accompanying video based on my song as a wake-up call. This is our last chance to take action. Tomorrow is too late. We must change our ways today, or we will be forced to say goodbye to Mother Earth as we know it.

This call for action is in my DNA. It’s an unwavering plea from the depths of my soul. We cannot continue to treat our planet with such disregard. We need to see the reality of what we’ve done and take immediate steps to mend our ways. Let "Toxic Jungle No.2" and "Say Goodbye to Mother Earth" be the catalyst for change. Let them stir something deep within you, as they have within me.

The Earth is crying out for our help. Will we answer her desperate call, or will we continue to turn a blind eye? The choice is ours, but the time is now!
